FOR

SCOTT
MORSE'S CRAZYFISH/MJ-12 TO PUBLISH ILLUSTRATED NOVEL BY ONI EDITOR
As
part of the relaunch of his publishing company, Crazyfish/MJ-12,
Scott Morse is pleased to announce the release of the debut
novel
by Jamie S. Rich, editor in chief of Oni Press. Entitled CUT MY
HAIR, this full-length story focuses on a nineteen year-old
that
likes comic books, parties, and punk music. Though the world around
him is harsh and full of rage, his main goal is to find warmth
in
the arms of the girl he loves. Before long, though, the two elements
crash into each other, and he is forced to find the path that
best
suits him. As added appeal for comic book fans, Mike and Laura
Allred (THE ATOMICS) have provided the cover, and the interiors
will feature
spot illustrations by Morse, Judd Winick (BARRY WEEN), Chynna Clugston-Major
(BLUE MONDAY), Renée French (THE NINTH GLAND), and Andi Watson
(GEISHA), who also did the character designs.
"I
can't be more excited by the opportunity that Scott has given me,"
Rich said. "I have been working on CUT MY HAIR for a long time,
and though it's purely fiction, I think the crisis of character
that the narrator goes through is one that many can relate to--particularly
comics fans or anyone who has belonged to a more marginalized
subculture. It deals with the reality of everyday life, but through
the eyes of a character who still has some imagination and spirit,
allowing for very romantic colors to tint everything."
Formed
as a company dedicated to doing oddball projects by various comic
book and animation professionals, Crazyfish/MJ-12 went on hiatus
in 1997 while Morse focused on other projects. Rich has been working
in the comics industry for six years, having previously been an
editor at Dark Horse Comics. He has been with Oni Press two years,
and has been editor in chief since April 1999. Oni is a company
devoted to publishing a wide variety of creator-owned comics, as
well as licensed tie-ins with CLERKS and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.
Rich is also known as a music journalist in Portland, Oregon.
"The
decision to make CUT MY HAIR an illustrated novel came from a suggestion
by Mike Allred," Rich continued. "He felt an illustrated
format--like
THE LITTLE PRINCE--would not only allow us to penetrate the comic
book market with this material, but also to stand out on the shelves
in regular book stores."
CUT
MY HAIR was released in July to much fan acclaim, and a recent multimedia
reading at the legendary Powell's Books in Portland garnered a 100
plus capacity crowd (August, 2002).
CUT
MY HAIR is available now. It is 248 pages in length, with 57 black-and-white
illustrations and a full color cover. It retails for $15.95 (ISBN
# is 0-970038-70-4). It features harsh language and mature situations.
