CAN YOU PICTURE THAT?
My monthly DVD review column for OniPress.com can be found in
The
Buzz section.
I am also a reviewer for DVDTalk.com, and my reviews can be tracked here.
PORTLAND
MERCURY
I have worked for The Portland Mercury since its inception a couple of years ago, and they are nice enough to have an archive on
their website of my material.
Of
particular note are the pieces on The Who, "Confessions of a
Pop Junkie," "Music: Response," and my live review
of Stephen Malkmus. With the latter, you might want to look at some
of
the future issues, as it generated a lot of hate mail (at some
point, maybe I will print the original, more acidic drafts.) Also,
you may want to check the following link for chapter 12 of Cut My
Hair, if you have never read the book. Though, they
erroneously credit the Mike Allred illo to Andi Watson.
Another
erroneous moment: the Jimmy Corrigan review they said I wrote
is not by me at all. Lies! My record reviews are not in my archives,
and if you really care, you can likely find some of them by
searching on my name and the words "CD Review."
WILLAMETTE
WEEK
I
also write for the Willamette Week. Their site is a little
hard to navigate, so I found some links that I thought were worth
checking out. They are here, basically in semi-reverse chronological
order (and I left out stuff where I felt I was butchered by
editorial red pens):
- my
article on Coldplay
my review of
Starsailor
- my
review of Ariel Schrag's
Potential
- an
article on Travis
(second on page)
- a
Belle & Sebastian review that, once again, pissed a lot of
people off despite being positive.
- a
double review of Suede & the
Manics that suffers from so much being crammed
into so little space.
- an
article on Supergrass
that I felt was somewhat of a breakthrough for me as a writer.
- another
controversial article, this time on avant-garde turntablist Eternal
Golden Void and sparking controversy over the meaning of
hiphop; also my first piece for a bigger paper and a lesson in
working with an editor.
- a
Q&A with Chunky Rice creator Craig
Thompson.
- a
review of Blur's
13
- a
review of Frank Miller's graphic novel, 300
- Adachi's
Short
Program
- the
debut album of Black
Box Recorder
- A
scathing attack on an easy target, Kid
Rock, that many people liked
You
can also read the paper's review of Cut
My Hair. I still like the line about crabs in a whorehouse.
SAVANT
I
did a couple of reviews at SavantMag.com back when Matt Fraction was
putting it together:
POPIMAGE
I
also contributed some to Popimage.com.
An
excerpt from the interview and the entire opinion piece are both
reprinted in Popimage I: A Year of Change, published by
Cyberosia and available
here.
While
there, perhaps you should also pick up Kelley Seda's graphic novel,
Rare Creature, which I wrote the introduction for also available
here.
MISCELLANEOUS WRITING
I've contributed text pieces to various graphic novels, all of which
are available through Amazon.

Warren
Ellis also featured me in his Brainpowered column on the site.
